Simple Border With Gradient Effect

Let's see how to make a simple border using gradients.

First of all note, that there must be a contrast between the foreground and background colors.

Let's say your background is black. Then you will need light color for the foreground:

1st Phase

Choose a pattern to make selection for your border, for example a rectangular with rounded corners.

2nd Phase

Select an area in your background and apply a gradient to it from upper right corner to lower left with the following settings:
Gradient: foreground to background
Type : Linear

3rd Phase

Choose Select > Modify > Contract to contract the selection and  insert '4 pixels' in 'Contract by' field. Now apply a gradient again but in the opposite direction.

4th Phase

Contract this selection by 4 pixels as well and press DELETE to remove the area inside your bounding box.

Here you go!

Enjoy the result!
